Sorry! I have been having too much fun lately to write a blog post. Except the other day when I was stuck inside because of the hurricane. I would have loved to write a post but there was no electricity and no internet so that idea was a bust. Okay I have a lot of pictures to post and tell you all about so let's get started!
First of all here is a picture of my very fast growing garden, pre-hurricane.
It is a little worn after all the wind and rain that hit it, but I think it will survive. If not I plant again because it only took 2 weeks to get these results.
Secondly here are the homemade crackers I made. They are delicious, especially after they sit for a day. Kind of taste like wheat thins. One of my favourite crackers. mmmmmmm
The next few pictures are ones I took on the way to the airport and at the airport. We were picking up our neighbours/friends who just came back from their semester break in Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands. They were all tanned and relaxed and it sounded like a lot of fun.
There are iguanas and goats everywhere! These are just the ones we stopped to take pictures of. And yes that is our airport. It even has a bar. And the last one is just a cute picture I took of Joel while we waited for their plane to arrive. And Ellen that is his Hunky Joel shirt he is wearing. I think that is why he is smiling so big.
Now on to my biggest success of the past week. PEROGIES!! I am not Ukranian at all and have only assisted in making perogies once before so I was pretty impressed with my results. I got the recipe from Canadian Living and it is perfect. I made a filling of potatoes, onion, bacon and cheddar cheese so you really can't go wrong. In the end I think I made close to 9 dozen perogies. The last couple dozen had to be Halal so they were just garlic mashed potatoes and we haven't tried them yet but they should be good too. So here is me in action and the finished product. It is making me hungry just looking at these pictures....
To compensate for the time, effort and supplies I only charge $10 a dozen before shipping and handling.
One more thing before we move on to what you have all been waiting for, our friend Earl, another hike. This one was down to a rocky beach called Spring Bay. The waves were too big for swimming but the water was beautiful. The only problem is it is full of the garbage of the sea. I mean shoes, bottles, nets, chairs and even this array of things Joel found, all for my father. (ps mom please show this to dad)
He found him the inboard/outboard he has been asking for, and it's called Cool Runnings, perfect!
Here are some pictures from the hike. The sea was a beautiful blue and the island was a stunning green. Perfect day for a hike.
The moment you have all been waiting for. Earl! We are very lucky to be on Saba and not stuck on St. Maarten like a lot of students. Westjet only flies to St. Maarten once a week and only on Sunday and school didn't start till Tuesday so the majority of students were coming here on Sunday and Monday. The airport here unfortunately shut down early Sunday so they were all stranded on St. Maarten. I have been hearing stories (since most are still not back) about sharing hotel rooms with like 12 people, not being able to leave the hotel and overpriced bad buffet food.
We on the other hand had it VERY easy. We went grocery shopping on Saturday and stocked up on food. Then on Sunday we prepared by putting away anything that could fly away. See picture below if our empty patio.
Then we closed all our shutters and Sunday night we watched a movie with out friends. Tough life right. They shut off the power to the island Sunday night and it was not restored till Tuesday afternoon. Which was okay with us because we have a generator and our landlord would put it on for a couple hours in the morning, a couple in the afternoon and then on Monday night we had electricity for like 6 hours. They even made us dinner (they used to run a restaurant so you can imagine how good it was) and went into their wine cellar and shared with us. We had a nice time getting to know them better and an all round great night.
The storm on Monday was nothing too bad. Like a bad thunderstorm with lots of rain and wind. On our side of the island it looked like nothing has happened. There were a few branches down here and there and leaves in piles but nothing major. Other parts of the island had more trees etc damaged but I don't think I saw any vehicles or buildings damaged. But we were pretty far from the center of the storm. See below.
I could not get a good picture of the storm because we are pretty sheltered where we live so this is the best I have. It just looks windy.
There you have it our week in pictures. I don't feel like re-reading this whole post so sorry for any spelling and grammar mistakes (mom). And hopefully I will post a little sooner next time. I am going to go enjoy my day with my husband who does not have school because the professors are also stuck on St. Maarten. He did go to school yesterday thinking there might be classes so this is his first day of school picture. Enjoy!
